Quadnickel and Jay Jones
Jay Jones, the motivating force behind Quadnickel Racing in Buena Vista, has
always been a fan of flying. His first airplane (at age 10) was a child's
wagon with homemade eight foot wings. The jokes of bystanders were silenced
when a strong gust of wind made the wagon airborne. While still a
youngster, he became interested in the sport of air racing and the Reno Air
Races, and in 1989 became a member of a Reno race crew for the first time.
Since then he has been a member of several Air Race crews, gaining experience and a
reputation among the racers. He always had a vision of his own, small,
inexpensive racer and in 1997, he completed the current Formula One class
Quadnickel aircraft based on a 1953 sport plane design by Tom Cassutt. The
plane competed for the first time two years ago. Last year, piloted by Ib
Hansen of Arvada, Quadnickel qualified at 199.329 miles per hour, 17 miles
per hour faster than the year before. This year, Jay hopes to be running
over 200 miles per hour, and be within the top group of 16 planes in the
Formula One class. Alternate pilot is Larry Lechner of Buena Vista. Ferdi
deSouza of Alamosa, along with Jay, will be mechanics and line crew.
Helping with ground support will be Lynda and Wylie Ewing and Charlene
Gilbert of Buena Vista. For more information, visit Quadnickel's website at
